Thirty suburbs, one kind of roof problem

Our patch runs from the Georges River at Chipping Norton and Moorebank, west through the Green Valley estate suburbs, and north across the Cumberland Plain to Smithfield and Wetherill Park. Most of it sits inside the Liverpool and Fairfield council areas, and a few suburbs at the northern edge straddle a neighbouring one.

The housing is more alike than the suburb names suggest. Most of it is single-storey brick with a tiled roof, built between the 1950s and the 1980s. Most of it has had something added since: a rear extension, an enclosed patio, a carport, a granny flat. That is where the leaks are, and that is what we spend our days on.

Liverpool and the Georges River

The oldest and most mixed stock in the area, from post-war cottages near the centre to 1990s estates on the river side.

The Green Valley estate suburbs

Built fast in the 1960s, which means these roofs are all hitting the same age at the same time.

West and south of Liverpool

A mix of 1970s brick-and-tile and newer estate housing, plus a lot of industrial roofing around the motorway junctions.

Fairfield, Cabramatta and the rail corridor

Dense older housing close to the stations, with flats, shop-top dwellings and a lot of rear additions.

Bonnyrigg out to Wetherill Park

Largely 1970s and 1980s subdivisions, with the big industrial estate sitting at the top of the area.
